Free topic
Hello my dear friends. Once again it's me, Julius. Well apparently it is my final trilogy of South Africa. So this is basically a free topic chapter you could say. Well I wasn't entirely sure of what I could do really. I was thinking about going to a restaurant or something. And did I? Yes I did. So I decided to go quite late. I haven't been in those restaurants in Durban really and there were very many. But I randomly took one. I was thinking of having curry for dinner. But as soon I went in the restaurant, I saw a person that I have recognized from pictures. He is the person that everyone in South Africa loves. I think I stood like a complete idiot for almost a minute. I was just thinking to myself ''Is it really him?''
Believe it or not: It was Nelson Mandela. He actually sat there on his own. I was really shocked and I couldn’t resist talking to him. First off I asked him is it actually you? Nelson Mandela? He just nodded and smiled. I introduced myself. I said that I was from Sweden, and it was a true honor to shake his hand. I asked if he could tell a bit of his back story. And he ended up telling me and of course we were eating our dinner in meantime; or I was anyway.
He began telling me that he fought for Apartheid. He was very against it. You know how bad black people were treated. I have probably mentioned that before. Anyway many people loved him because of that. And I can really understand that. Even though he wanted rights for black people, he was imprisoned for 27 years on Robban island. Many people hated that you know and they tried to get him out of there. Once he got out after 27 years he became the first black South African person to be voted in as president. And they have never hated him. And now of course he is too old to be president. He is actually 93 years old now which is quite amazing. Well this was something that I didn’t really expect. It was a wonderful evening. We both had a laugh. He was curious about my country. Well in Sweden we definitely are rich. It’s not like “in this part of Sweden there are a lot poor people for example”. We have a different economy and a much easier way to get help, to get education. Also it isn’t about like white people having more power over black people.
Well now I can tell a bed time story to my kids, if I ever get any…well anyway I had a great time. That’s the main thing.
